For many years there
has been demand from
local residents,
businesses and
transport companies
to persuade
disinterested
national and local
government bodies
to investigate the
extensive traffic
problems of Boston,
and to consider the
dire need of a
suitable bypass to
relieve congestion,
pollution and
wastage of time and
fuel.
Boston exists on a
"cross roads" of
north - south
traffic, providing
links from the ports
of Hull and Grimsby
(A16) to the
south-east.
East - west seasonal
tourist traffic,
regional traffic,
and heavy transport
also pass through
the town centre,
providing access to
all Lincolnshire
coastal holiday
resorts (A16 and
A52). Coupled with
local traffic,
agricultural
transport and the
poor quality winding
roads tolerated in
Lincolnshire,
(reputed to be the
most dangerous in
Europe - many
categorised as "Red
Routes"), the
situation is
intolerable in a
modern European
society.
All through
traffic must pass
through the centre
of the town.
Given this
intolerable
situation, a
small group of
frustrated local
residents met in
October
2004 where
they decided to
form a campaign
group to
pressure Boston
Borough Council,
Lincolnshire
County Council
and the
Department of
Transport into
accepting the
need for a Major
Road Scheme for
Boston and to
actively pursue
that agenda.
From that first
meeting the
Boston and
District Bypass
Pressure Group
was formed.
Since it's
inception the
group membership
has steadily
increased from
the original 4
members to a
membership which
today stands at
16, with 3 more
prospective
members waiting
in the wings.
